Accessibility
Pladra is a two-person company in Northern California. We want this site to work for everyone who wants to shop here, including people using screen readers, keyboard navigation, screen magnification, or voice control.
If something on this site gets in your way, call or email us. A real person will answer and we will help you directly.
The standard we build to
We work toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. It is the benchmark most commonly used to measure whether web content is usable by people with visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive disabilities.
What we have done
- Hired an independent developer to audit pladra.com against WCAG 2.1 Level AA and remediate the issues that audit identified.
- Written real, descriptive alternative text for our product photography, so screen reader users get a description of the shirt rather than a filename.
- Fixed a defect that was truncating that alternative text on product pages, so the full description now reaches assistive technology.
- Added names to the color swatches on our product pages, which previously announced nothing at all.
- Corrected a hidden link on our homepage that could trap keyboard focus without announcing anything.
- Raised the contrast of text that fell below the WCAG minimum, and added a proper label to our customer review ratings.
- Added a skip-to-content link and a pause control on moving content.
- Made accessibility part of how we review changes to our site, rather than a one-time project.
Where we still have work to do
Accessibility is ongoing work, not a finished project. Our store runs on Shopify and uses third-party apps for search, reviews, cart, and email signup. Those tools sometimes introduce problems we did not write and cannot always fix ourselves, though we do report them and push for fixes.
We currently know about and are working on the following:
- Alternative text on some of our marketing and editorial photography, which we are still writing.
- Low-contrast text inside payment and financing components supplied by Shopify, which we cannot restyle directly. We have reported it.
- Filtering on collection pages, while we move to a new search and filtering system.
We would rather tell you about these than pretend they are not there. If you run into something that is not on this list, we want to hear about it.
If the site is in your way, let us help
Do not fight the website. Call or email and we will take it from there. We can describe products in detail, walk you through sizing, check what is in stock, place an order for you over the phone, or handle an exchange or return.
Call: (707) 506-0532
Email: support@pladra.com
We answer email within one business day, usually sooner.
Reporting an accessibility problem
Email support@pladra.com with “Accessibility” in the subject line. It helps us if you can tell us:
- The page you were on, including the web address if you have it
- What you were trying to do
- What got in the way
- The device, browser, and any assistive technology you were using
We read and log every one of these. We will respond within one business day and tell you what we intend to do about it.
Our shop in Mill Valley
Our shop at the Mill Valley Lumber Yard is a historic property, and we would rather you know exactly what to expect than be surprised when you arrive. Call us at (707) 506-0532 and we will describe parking, the approach to the shop, and the space inside. If getting there is difficult, we are happy to help you over the phone instead.
How we test
We test our pages with automated accessibility tooling and review the results by hand, because automated checks catch only part of what matters. We do this whenever we make significant changes to the site.
Keeping this current
We review this page whenever we make significant changes to the site, and at least twice a year.
